An original production cel from a Walter Lantz Studios commercial for Ipana Toothpaste titled “Boy Meets Dog” (1938). Featuring several gnome characters, the hand-painted cel was created at the studio and used during the animation process. The cel represents an actual frame of animation that was photographed and appears in the short. After the success Courvoisier Galleries had in marketing the artwork of the Disney Studios, almost every major studio made their own attempt to market their production cels. In the case of this particular cel, it has been placed on a background, likely from another short, with a custom mat. The mat is inscribed, “Eenie-Meenie-Minie” and has been hand-signed by Walter Lantz. Measuring 17”x19” overall, with a mat opening measuring 8”x11”, and a character image measuring 3”x8.5”, the cel is in very good condition with light paint loss and paint lifting throughout, rippling throughout, and corner wear to the mat.
